Chicken news

Chickens were moved into the tractor once it cooled down.
We put in their feeder but the tractor has an inbuilt feeder that you just fill and forget

See under the enclosed part. The feed is there and you fill it from the top. See the pipe?

The pipe along the side is for water.

They seemed to like it. And had fun trying out grass. I was feeding them greens but it’s much nicer for them to graze

We will leave them here for a fe days and then move them around. The tractor is heavy so will will need strong help. Or hubby  will work out a way to tow it with the ride on mower.

I’m happy to report they survived the night.
Although the metal is strong stuff. Not cheap chicken wire. So foxes will need a cutter to get through

Rain predicted again. But lately it’s been missing us.
I would like it to rain here. Save me watering

It’s too hot to stand outside for long periods of time

  1. Are your chooks always enclosed or do you let them out? I suppose you would have to train them to come back.

    1. They’re always enclosed unless I can stay with them. Foxes are now taking chooks durning the day as well.
Chickens will always return to their roosts at night. So you don’t have to train them

    1. I guess they wouldn’t take any of your chickens. So that’s good.
I’ve come home before, and all chickens have been taken because I wasn’t in time to lock them up

  3. I wondered what a chicken tractor was. Why would chickens need to plow?? I guess it means an enclosure that can be pulled about?

    1. That’s exactly what it is. They are being used more and more. Chickens can graze safely and be moved to fresh pastures regularly

  4. I suppose you’ll have to visually mark the ground out in a grid so you know where to go to next. Don’t want to over fertilise- I believe chook ‘manure’ can be quite strong. These are the eaters you’re raising aren’t they? Going to god sometime or another?

    1. You can easily see where they have been. They eat all the grass.

    1. Yes I’ve lost chickens to them before. And a few lambs. Horrid things

  6. They also eat any bugs they encounter which is a great way to reduce the bug loading around your garden. Can you put some skids under the chicken coop to make it easier to tow?

    1. It’s got wheels. It’s just very heavy.
